June 2005 - Challenger Bark Dog Friendly Area (DFA) has been open for about a year and a half now and we’ve seen a lot of turnover – people leaving the neighborhood and new neighbors moving in.  It seems as if the number of folks and their pooches using Challenger Bark is at an all-time high.  It is rare that I walk by and see the park anymore, which makes me really happy!

If you'd like to be on the Challenger Bark email list, please email me at the email address at the bottom of the page.  We send emails about what's going on at the park, good to know info for your dog, and important neighborhood news impacting the DFA.

Now, you may not know it, but the Park District does not do the day-to-day maintenance on the DFA.  That is handled by a small (now very small) group of Challenger Bark users called the Dog Area Council, who now need your help.  With winter seemingly over, there are a few things that need to be done.

It is important to note that an active Dog Area Council is required by the Park District if we want to keep the DFA open.

The following are some of the responsibilities of the Dog Area Council:

  1. Clean-up of trash (especially forgotten poop)
  2. Sweeping the pebbles
  3. Filling the poop bag dispensers
  4. Pressure washing the surface (monthly)
  5. Working with the Park District to obtain upgrades/improvements requested by park users

Obviously, this is not too time-consuming if there are a lot of people to help, but when there are only two or three it can be tough.  If you are interested in helping maintain the DFA, please email me at the email address listed below.

We are also looking to update the Photos page with recent photos of the dogs that play in Challenger Bark.  Please send me an electronic picture of your dog or dogs so I can add it.  (The pictures we have up are from when we only had the temporary area set-up.   Many of those dogs do not even live in the neighborhood anymore!!)  We want to put up pictures of dogs using the DFA now.

Finally, we have recently received quotes for message centers for each end of the park from the Park District's vendor.  The message centers would be used to post important information of interest to DFA patrons.  (To see a picture of what we'd like to order, click here.)  The total cost is around $1,900, of which we have already raised around $1,400.  If you would like to donate or know a local business owner who might, please let me know.  We have already received a generous donation from the owner of Nick's Uptown on Sheridan Road.
